THE SOLITUDE OF (PAUL) WATSON

By Claudio Campagna

“Watson,” the documentary, hints at the partner of an absent Holmes. However, the character is not John, but Paul, Paul Watson. Far is this man from the temperance, the objective rigor and the mostly affable character with which Sherlock's friend is outlined. Paul Watson is a warrior who took communications by the horns, twisted the head of the bull and presented him with the cruelty that has reigned in the sea since human beings jumped on a boat for the first time ever.

The documentary is structured around an interview that stops from time to time to insert images of marine life, among the best I have seen, as well as archive images that show Paul in the times of Greenpeace, or captaining, in the midst of battle, a ship belonging to his organization, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

The interview is the heart of the documentary. Yet, what is insurmountable are the historical images of what was called “direct action”, tactics to dissuade whaling vessels, or vessels that “fin” sharks, to cease their senseless cruelty, which is unfathomable to reason. The footage shows a Watson leading a commando group in an inflatable boat that stands in the path of a harpoon. The spear is fired anyway, and hits a whale, flying over the heads of the activists. In another example, Watson strikes and damages the hull of a pirate whaling boat with the bow of his environmental warship.

Among the images that matter most are those of the seal hunt by the Canadians. Hunters -are they even human beings?-stick a hook into the body of a baby seal to prevent it from escaping into the water. Once secured, they will break her skull with a club. “Good people,” these sealers and whalers... as good as those who catch sharks on baited hooks, load them on board, cut their fins off and throw them, mutilated, overboard. The animals fall to the bottom of the sea like a dry leaf drawing curves in the air.

Watson was persecuted, accused, arrested, imprisoned and exposed to all the paraphernalia of legal instruments that the Western world is capable of conceiving to defend the whaler, the sealer, etc. Watson was labeled as a criminal, and those who opposed him were called the harmed ones.

The film confronts notions of good and evil, of what is acceptable and unacceptable. Watson recalls his life with the tranquility of a mercenary. He maintains in the interview an expression of smiling eyes. You already find it in the young Watson. And yet, frustration creeps in, even hatred for those who, under an argument of questionable necessity, claim rights as if they were martyrs of the environmentalists.

Watson the documentary tells a precise story but in an exceedingly long time. The extraordinary images of marine life are not necessary for the viewer to understand what is at stake. The aesthetic contrast is excessive; it takes us away from the times when Watson built his own mind and film images to live, resisting major universal injustices. Watson defends himself by claiming that his direct actions never physically harmed anyone, while those he pursued killed hundreds, thousands of animals for their own convenience. That is the baseline conflict.

The whaling industry brought the most spectacular species to the brink of extinction. At some point it was the United States, and the Russians and Japanese, Norwegians and Spanish. Iceland still defends its whaling culture. Shark finning massacres hundreds of thousands of sharks so that in Hong Kong, or perhaps in Wuhan, from where we received the virus that changed our lives, a rich man may chose to order shark fin soup.

Watson, the man without equal, the man alone, is important. In the environmentalist world, there was no one who better demonstrated his distrust of institutions to remedy evil done to nature. His form of violence collided with a universe of other violence, allowed by the powers-that-be, even subsidized by the taxes of ordinary people. Climate change does not have a Watson. It has science that, so far, has not taken us far.

In short, Watson the documentary rescues images that today –although harpooning is still happening- nobody wants (or dare) showing anymore. Watson failed, because whales are still being killed, and sharks are still being finned more than ever. But he cannot be denied an attempt to change the aesthetics of the sea, so close to what it should be, to the ethical value. Watson was a successful failure. Those who condemn him ultimately rescue him. The seed of a Watson is germinating in many of us.

I would like not to justify him, as it would perhaps be the politically correct thing to do. But a world without characters such as Watson would fail to achieve fundamental changes. Diplomacy and negotiations, cost-benefit analysis and tradeoffs have given us the planet that we have: burnt out, with melted glaciers, and a variety of species threatened with extinction; and all without shame or glory. Could a legion of Watsons have changed the scenarios? I am thinking in a vacuum, as there is no such a thing… Besides, there is no more room for profiles like his.
